He is married to Susan Zappulla-Peters, a pastry chef and native of Torrington, and they have two children, Kyla,  a graduate of Quinnipiac University with a degree in health sciences, living in CA, and Kirby, who has a degree in Agriculture from Cornell and now has returned to Roxbury to lease and run Maple Bank Farm.  David's interests include railroads, and being a handyman. He loves a challenge to fix something around the house! In November 2022, Susan and David welcomed their first grandchild, Archer.

On his days off during the tourist season, David works as a train conductor on the Essex Steam Train and Riverboat in Essex, CT as he grew up in a railroad family and has a life-long passion for trains.
